Leslie Lamport (1941)

Lamport produced some of the most cited papers in computer science especially in the field of distributed computing, synchronization (clocks) and concurrency and considered a trailblazer in this area. He was also the initial developer of LaTeX a text processing system built on Donald Knuth TeX.

Lamport also invented some early authentication and cryptographic solutions such as S/Key and the Lamport-Signature.

Fun facts:

  • His Paxos algorithm was named so because he described the algorithm as the solution to a problem of the parliament on a fictitious Greek island called Paxos. The paper got rejected on the grounds that it was too confusing. After some years people started to understand the importance of the algorithm. He submitted the paper (unaltered) and it then was accepted.
